Explore Sabah
The Malaysian state of Sabah in Borneo is a nature lover’s paradise, with beautiful islands, tropical forests and unparalleled wildlife. Alongside this nature sits some fascinating cities, from the cultural state capital of Kota Kinabalu in the north to the coastal city of Sandakan. Sabah is an exciting destination offering nature, adventure and anything in between. With new Royal Brunei Airlines routes your customers can arrive in Sabah in just over an hour from Brunei.
Nature
Borneo is known for having some of the most beautiful flora and fauna on the planet. The Maliau Basin Conservation Area, also known as Sabah’s Lost World, is home to some incredible biodiversity and boasts stunning seven-tier waterfalls, which are well-worth venturing into the forest for. Sabah is where you can find the Rafflesia (pictured), a unique type of flower, which measures up to an astounding three feet in diameter. Although the flowers only bloom for less than a week, they really have to be seen to be believed. Borneo is also famous for its breathtaking sunsets, and there is no better way to end the day than sitting back and taking in the stunning views.
Wildlife
Wildlife is in abundance in Sabah. The pygmy elephants are among the most exciting animals to encounter and can be found in the Kinabatangan river in the northeast of Sabah, along with orangutans, alligators and more. If your customers want to explore the sea life, the island of Swallow Reef, north of Sabah, is where hammerhead sharks reside, and April and May are the best times to see them. Sabah is also home to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, just outside of Sandakan, while next door is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, the only one of its kind in the world, where travellers can learn about this vulnerable species of bear.
Adventure
Sabah is the perfect destination for adventure travellers, with ziplining, paragliding and diving just some of the many activities available. Kiulu, an hour from Kota Kinabalu, has a river with grade II rapids suitable for white-water rafting beginners, while those looking to head to new heights can try their hand at Kiulu’s zipline, as well as its abseiling and high ropes courses. Meanwhile, if your customers are keen to take in Sabah’s incredible scenery, they can hike up Mount Kinabalu. It’s particularly special at sunrise. Standing more than 13,000ft above sea level, watching the sun emerge through the clouds is an experience of a lifetime.
