Comprehensive knowledge of timber’s structural performance and its interaction with other building systems will lead to more innovative and successful designs. The positive news is there are many knowledgeable and well-established experts in the industry to assist in this aim. The Structural Timber Association is the collective voice of these experts and industry representing the structural timber sector and associated supply chain companies. Raising the bar for sustainability, quality, health and safety, skills training, and technical knowledge across the structural timber sector, the Structural Timber Association (STA) was established to drive awareness of the value and benefits structural timber can bring to the construction industry.
Quality assurance
It is important that quality and standards of construction must be to the highest degree; therefore, the STA sees accreditation is crucial to providing all stakeholders with evidence that companies are held to a high quality standard.
STA Assure, the STA’s Quality Assurance Scheme, delivers strong reassurances to the construction community regarding its members’ compliance with current legislation and regulatory standards. Through a rigorous assessment process, the scheme ensures that design, production, and site assembly processes, as well as quality controls, consistently meet or surpass standards. It is crucial to note that members seeking STA Assure accreditation must ensure that the installers they hire have successfully completed the STA’s Timber Frame Competency Award Scheme (TFCAS) to ensure knowledge and training in installing these systems.
By understanding the structural timber as a material, fostering collaboration and ensuring quality, stakeholders can unlock the full potential of this method of construction and meet their building’s service-life objectives. Multiple roles for Marmox Thermoblock in stylish petworth property
The construction of a truly individual new home in West Sussex is making use of Marmox Thermoblocks to tackle the issue of cold bridging, both around the building perimeter and to protect the ground fl oor slab where it spans a substantial basement structure, containing both the plant room and a wine cellar. The six- bedroom and fi ve-bathroom dwelling near the village of Lurgashall is being built by Grangewood Southern Ltd on behalf of a private developer, with Fusion Brickwork being the specialist sub-contractor responsible for installing the 140 mm wide version of the Marmox Thermoblocks as part of an unusual wall construction, which features an inner and outer leaf of concrete blockwork faced with random natural stonework. Some 250 of the 600 mm long by 100 mm deep composite units have been installed using the Marmox 360 sealant to secure the overlapping end joints. With a proven track record going back more than a decade, Thermoblocks are available in widths of 100, 140 and 215 mm and feature a unique design where two rows of high strength epoxy concrete mini-columns are encapsulated in sections of XPS (Extruded Polystyrene).

Nestled between steep Devon hills is Redhill Barn, an award-winning barn conversion that is quietly pushing the boundaries of timber frame engineering. Sarah and Tom, architects from London based practice Type Studio, undertook the conversion. The large existing barn was roofl ess and ruined, Type’s brief was to restore the building’s character and retain the simplicity of the once functional building,
