MODERN METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION 67
Unlocking design ambition with offsite brick slip detailing
Meka Ewurum at Keystone explores how offsite manufactured brick slip features are enabling architects and specifi ers to combine traditional masonry detailing with fast, precise construction for distinctively detailed results.
B
rick remains one of the defi ning materials of British architecture. Its longevity, versatility and connection to place continue to make it one of the most widely specifi ed facade materials across residential, commercial and civic projects. Through variations in bond, texture, colour and form, brickwork introduces rhythm, depth and character while allowing buildings to respond to both their setting and architectural intent. Many of Britain’s most recognisable brick buildings derive their identity from carefully considered detailing, rather than the material alone. Arches, corbels, soldier courses, recessed panels, projecting brickwork and decorative lintels create hierarchy across a facade, adding shadow, texture and visual interest. These details establish a building’s architectural language and contribute signifi cantly to its relationship with the surrounding streetscape.
The demand for this level of architectural expression remains strong, yet projects are increasingly delivered within tighter construction programmes and with greater pressure on specialist trades. Labour shortages, complex procurement routes and demanding project schedules can make intricate masonry detailing more diffi cult to achieve consistently using traditional site built methods alone. As a result, architects and specifi ers are increasingly considering offsite manufactured brick features as part of an integrated facade strategy. Rather than replacing conventional brickwork, factory manufactured brick slip features complement it by providing complex architectural elements that can be manufactured under controlled conditions before installation onsite.

This approach improves dimensional accuracy, repeatability and coordination while reducing the reliance on specialist onsite craftsmanship for highly detailed masonry features.
The greatest advantage for designers is the level of architectural fl exibility these systems provide. Brick slip feature lintels can accommodate a wide variety of bond patterns, enabling architects to create distinctive masonry detailing while maintaining buildability. Flat, segmental, gothic, parabolic, apex and bullseye arches can all be produced as prefabricated units, alongside bespoke brick panels, soffi ts, feature surrounds and decorative
