Supporting hand hygiene, managing water quality
I
n hospitals and other healthcare environments,
effective hand hygiene
is supported by clinical handwashing facilities that deliver warm water at a safe, constant and comfortable temperature, with an appropriate fl ow rate that minimises splashing and encourages consistent handwashing practice. But every clinical tap also sits at the end of a sometimes complex water system, where design can infl uence commissioning, water quality, stagnation and ongoing management. Designed specifi cally for clinical environments,
the award-winning*
Horne Optitherm combines hands-free lever operation with thermostatically controlled warm water and cold drinking water, delivered via a single shared outlet. Temperature is controlled right at the point of discharge, minimising the mixed-water deadleg, while the shared outlet for warm or cold-water draw-off increases turnover and limits stagnation.
Behind that user experience is a design equally focused on water quality and system management. For compliant commissioning, and thereafter, the Optitherm provides for cleansing fl ushing at elevated velocities immediately upstream of the mixing mechanism: higher fl ow velocities increase shear at internal supply-pipe walls, helping to erode and mobilise excess biofi lm and debris
into the fl ow for removal to drain. Maintainability is also fundamental. Isolation points enable simple in-situ performance testing,
strainers and the thermostatic cartridge are readily accessible for cleaning,
while protective servicing
or replacement. Smooth external surfaces aid cleaning, and the precision outlet fi tting is also easily removed for cleaning, disinfection or replacement.
Where a higher level of water-hygiene control is required, an optional ILTDU can facilitate periodic thermal disinfection, using the available system-temperature hot water, through to the point of discharge. Designed around both user and water- system needs,
the Optitherm supports
effective hand hygiene while assisting active water-quality control and management throughout a long service life. * Building Better Healthcare awards, Best Interiors Product, 2008.
