3. Helena had 29 stickers. She shared them equally among her 3 friends. How many stickers does each friend receive? How many stickers were remaining?
4. Jason had €32. He wanted to buy some graphic novels. If a graphic novel costs €9, how many can he buy? How much money has he left over?
5. Mrs Schwarz shared 50 packets of sweets equally among 9 children at a party. How many packets of sweets does each child receive? How many packets are left over?
6. There are 50 children at a football tournament. If there are 7 children on each team, how many teams are there? How many children are not on a team?
Repeated Subtraction
We can also think of division as repeated subtraction. For example: Share these jellies equally among eight children.
We begin with 40 jellies and then we subtract 8 until we can no longer subtract. 40
– 8 32
– 8 24
– 8 16
– 8 8
– 8 0
We can no longer subtract, so we have finished. We can take 8 away from 40 a total of 5 times.
