64 Get out and help out!

As winter settles in it’s easy to close the doors after dark and huddle up at home.. but there’s so much going on… Dartmouth’s busy and vibrant community thrives on people of all ages taking part and our 3 major events rely wholeheartedly on a large group of enthusiastic and inspiring volunteers.

Get fit, learn a new skill, get creative,

boost those brain cells and broaden your horizons or simply have a good chat and

connect with others. Skills and experience aren’t always essential you just need you

to rock up with bags of enthusiasm. Some groups are run by individuals, some by the council, a local college or even by the U3a. Keep your eyes peeled on local noticeboards and local facebook pages – you never know what you might find!

There are lots of opportunities to get fit with low-cost classes (pilates, yoga etc) at Dartmouth Leisure Centre, The Flavel and Townstal Hall as well as in many of the lo- cal village halls. Keen dancers are lucky to have not 1 but 2 ex-Strictly dancers/choreographers (Flavia Cacace-Mistry and Jenny Thomas) in the area sharing their expert knowledge and infectious energy.

If you want to exercise your vocals think about signing up with a cappella choir Dartmouth Rock or Britannia Choral Society or you could learn a new instrument, join Dartmouth Orchestra or our community steel band (shinesteelband.com).

For

Aside from the busy U3a group there are a number of table tennis, bridge, book and flower arrang- ing groups as well as the ever reliable and informa- tive WI groups in villages around Dartmouth. For the more adventurous you can try Fencing in Kingswear or you could even try your hand at bellringing in any of the local churches.

the young there are sports

clubs, Brownies, Cubs, Scouts and Sea Cadets or

Dramatically Different Dart- mouth Youth Theatre and the recently launched Dartmouth Theatre Company.

Creative types have a wealth of choice with painting workshops (Helena Clews at The Flavel), pottery classes at Olive’s Pots in the Market, Stitchery club in The Flavel or even willow workshops with the very talented Sue Radford at Stone Willow in Blackawton.

Volunteering opportunities are numerous… help out with a local charity like Dartmouth Caring, The Flavel, Dart Sailability, Dartmouth Green Partnerships, Force 4 Nature, the community café in the market, or with the energetic Dartmouth Youth club. This is just a snapshot of what’s on locally but the opportunities are endless. And remember if you run small classes or a community group and need to reach new audiences – let us know - we are here to celebrate local life!

If you run a local community group, club, class or organisation and are looking to attract new members, volunteers etc, why not promote yourself on our Clubs, Classes & Society page (see opposite). Adverts cost from as little as £30 + vat. Call or email Kim Fricker (details on page 4)
