T

he Autumn has been a busy time for the Chamber so there is plenty to update you on.

Our September meeting was a chance to discuss the challenges our visitor facing businesses have had over the summer, including thoughts on how Dartmouth can extend its visitor season - including an update on our Dartmouth In December initiative – see the schedule below. We also discussed the proposal to expand the town toilets and have submitted our agreed position on this to Dartmouth Town Council.

Attendees at our October open meeting heard from Victoria Benns at BeWild about her community-based project to encourage businesses to re-connect with nature. Victoria talked with great enthusiasm about her desire to create a conversation within local communities about biodiversity, to encourage naturalist activity that pushes understanding and action. Her dream is to see Dartmouth and the local area as a recognised biodiversity hotspot - and what better place to do that, with our beautiful natural surroundings that encompass fields, woodland, coast, river and sea. Look out for Victoria’s postcards that are appearing across businesses taking part in the conversation - perhaps you would like to get involved too.

as business type, unoccupied business properties, visitor numbers, number of beds, occupancy rates etc, we can identify weaknesses and work to resolve them. This is a key part of the Chamber’s advocacy role, and we hope you will be able to help with some of the information we will be seeking in the coming months.

Finally, Laura (Vice Chair of the Chamber) represented Dartmouth at the Riviera Connect Event in October. Laura was kept busy talking about the work of the Chamber and ExploreDartmouth tourism brand. She also handed out plenty of brochures for Dartmouth activities and businesses working with ExploreDartmouth and was delighted to

sign up some new Chamber members while she was there.

The next Chamber of Commerce open meetings are:

6th December, Open Meeting, 6pm at DYC – A Review of Chamber Activity in 2024 and Christmas drinks! 21st January, Open Meeting, 5.30pm at DYC 18th February, AGM Meeting, 5.30pm at DYC Thereafter the 3rd Tuesday of each month

We look forward to seeing you soon.

At the same meeting we also heard from Jo (Chair of the Chamber) about our data project. The plan is to gather together existing and new sources of information so as a business community we are better informed on the type of businesses in our District, and the health of our local economy. We know this is an ambitious project, but through a better understanding of a range of metrics such
