I don’t think Jo & Laura realised quite what a journey they were embarking on when they launched the Dartmouth & District Chamber of Commerce back in January. It’s fair to say they are being kept busy with requests, inputs and projects. If the feedback from April’s Open Meeting is anything to go by, then Dartmouth & District businesses are ready for change: “Vibrant, a breath of fresh air”, “great for Dartmouth”.

So, what have the Chamber Executive been

up to? For a start 111 businesses are now signed up, and activity on the website and socials are increasing all the time as the team share news and updates. The Co-Chairs have been advocating for Dartmouth at area Council meetings about parking meters and the park and ride scheme. As a result, South Hams District Council is putting more effort into engaging with local businesses before big decisions are made.

The monthly Open meetings are developing,

and this month included presentations from Ben Poultney at South Devon College, and Jonathan Fisher from the National Trust. Ben was able to share information about the apprenticeship opportunities the College can help with. He shared with attendees that apprenticeships are changing, with fewer in the teenage bracket, and more among older employees who are upskilling with employer support. The idea of training to retain might not be how we traditionally think of apprenticeships, but why not, when it can be easier and more cost effective to upskill existing employees than find wholly new staff.

The National Trust presentation shared the shift in thinking within the organisation towards Climate Action and Farming with Nature. Jonathan was also mindful of how the NT

coastline on the South West Coast Path gives the organisation a role in making the link between mental health and everything our amazing outdoors has to offer.

The meeting also heard from Mark Readman

who is leading the Dartmouth in December initiative on the Executive Committee. He is determined to change the idea that Dartmouth goes to sleep in the off season and is working his way around various local businesses and groups to pull together a calendar of activities for December. His words drew much appreciation from attendees, and some new ideas, so look out for more news on that.

Finally, in case you haven’t heard, the Chamber

is going to be collaborating with a New Tourism Venture for Dartmouth based at the Engine House. A new board is being formed in order to take over the lease on the property, which includes the Visitors Centre. This means a fresh approach to tourism in Dartmouth, that seeks to reflect the needs of businesses, residents and visitors alike in order to generate revenue and opportunities across the town. The team are already in contact with the VC staff and volunteers and looks forward to working with them.

Next meeting date: Tuesday 21st May 5.30pm Open meeting at The Flavel
