Dartmouth & District Community Indoor Swimming Pool By Craig Davidson, Chair of Dartmouth and District Indoor Pool Trust
A
re you aware that the Indoor Pool is a commu- nity asset managed by
a Charitable Trust (Dartmouth and District Indoor Pool Trust, DIPT*) on your behalf? Aſter many years of campaigning, we were finally able to commission the building back in 2015, funding being provided by the community, Dartmouth Town, South Hams District and Devon County Coun- cils and the Hadley Trust. Since the pool opened the following year, our mission has been to look aſter the pool building, ensure the facilities and pool equipment are safe and to generally promote health, fitness and “safety in the water” for all. Te Trust has a stewardship role in overseeing Fusion Lifestyle’s operation of the pool on our behalf and a charitable role of continu- ally improving the facilities and expanding the range of activities to all members of the public. Tis has seen the much welcomed re-es- tablishment of the former Dart- mouth Swimming Club (DSC), now boasting over 100 members, which provides coaching to juniors, masters, rookie lifeguards and a new fun session (Dippers) for the little ones. In conjunction with Coast and Water Safety, DSC also provide a free Junior Water Safety Programme to school children.
Other users of the pool include Dartmouth Youth Club, an Exercise on Referral scheme, aqua-aerobics, over 50s swimming and dedicated lane swimming. Tis year we commissioned a
local artist, Els Doodles, to paint a series of joyful murals on the walls around the learner pool and the pool entrance. Te lively depiction of seaweed and marine life will delight young and old. Els was in- spired by our amazing coastline in her depiction of playful marine life such as cheeky mackerel, to funny jellyfish and mer-people. Els has previously installed artwork at the Dartmouth Academy and in the
Market Place in Totnes. A colour- ing competition based upon Els’s artwork has proved popular with young swimmers and prizes of free family swim sessions will shortly take place. Next, we plan to improve the enjoyment of the pool with sound absorbing panels to reduce echo. With the increase in swim club and youth club popularity, it was clear we needed to take steps to enable teachers and their classes to hear each other. Te replacement of the water filtration system a couple of years ago has much improved the user experience with clearer water and an ecological benefit in reduc- ing the amount of chorine used for bacterial suppression. A further scheme this year will see us partner with Level Water, a national charity that helps children with disabilities to learn to swim and be safe when involved in water based activities. Tey plan to begin running small group classes this summer employing specially trained coaches and subsequent- ly to link the scheme with Dart Sailability for on water as well as in-water fun.
