66 Anthony Mangnall MP A

s the Member of Parliament for Totnes and South Devon,

I spend a great deal of time working on local matters. It has always been my ethos to put people before politics and ensure that you, the residents of South Devon, have a strong voice in Westminster. This has led to my work being

predominantly focussed on local matters such as farming, fishing, local job opportunities and housing. While politics might well be the art of the possible, I am pleased after four years to report some significant successes, from ensuring that farming is never off the agenda and attracting millions of pounds of investment into the fishing and

photonics sectors, to campaigning (successfully) to temporarily reduce VAT for the tourism and hospitality sectors and addressing the imbalance between short-term and long-term rentals. Getting it right locally means being able to listen to what you, as residents, need and then setting off to deliver. I spend many hours each week out and about in the constituency where I meet a huge number of local residents, as well as holding weekly open meetings in towns and villages across South Devon. Topics of conversation at recent open meetings have included affordable housing, planning rules, dentistry and of course potholes. I can assure residents that I am working on each and every one of these topics, liaising with local councils and meeting with relevant industry professionals to ensure progress is being made. Regular local meetings have also led to me delivering two new local banking hubs, a new chamber of commerce, an updated local infrastructure plan and a number of new bus routes. All of these measures have helped

to change the local landscape for the better, but the ‘to do’ list is never complete. While some current

challenges are significant, they are by no means impossible. Whether it be addressing affordable housing or changing attitudes about the local job market, there are ways in which significant differences can be made. Through the creation of my annual Careers Fair for local students to introducing new measures to register and permit short term lets, we are steadily changing the perspective to benefit those who live and work in South Devon. Whether it be through

local working groups or funds encouraging community engagement, South Devon holds many of examples showing what can be done through the power of localism. If anything, it shows that the Government does not need to legislate for great things to happen but to encourage, cultivate and incentivise. Please do visit www.anthonymangnall.co.uk to find details of upcoming open meetings and to learn more about my work. If you would like to talk to me personally about local and national issues, then please do get in touch. I am always happy to meet with local residents, so contact me on 01803 868378 or email anthony.mangnall.mp@parliament.uk if you would like to make an appointment.
