TRIBOLOGY 50th Anniversary of the “Jost Report”
On the 17th March 2016 it will be 50 years since the ground breaking report “Lubrication (Tribology) education and Research” was published. This document, commonly referred to as the “Jost Report” reported on the findings of a committee organised on behalf of the UK government, chaired by Prof H. P. Jost, which outlined the dramatic economic savings which could be gained through the correct application of sound tribological principles. It also coined the
word “tribology” to define the then new science of interacting surfaces in relative motion.
The publication inspired the development and integration of multi-disciplinary studies in friction, wear and lubrication to form the subject as we know it today. It also inspired the formation of the Tribology Group Committee, the first in the world, at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication the IMechE and its partners: the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology, the Leonardo Centre and the University of Bradford are organising a half day event the “50th Anniversary of the ‘Jost Report’”. Eminent tribologists from across Europe will present a perspective of the development of their specialist area. Presentations will describe 50 years of development in: hydrodynamic lubrication, bio-lubrication, measurements in tribology, friction and energy saving and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication/boundary lubrication. Other eminent tribologists from around the world will also participate as non-technical speakers.
One of the event Chairman, Prof Ian Sherrington, Director of the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology commented, “the impact of the Jost Report has been profound. This is a great opportunity for tribologists to meet and honour the man who has precipitated the development and organisation of the subject of tribology”.
The event is free and more information is available on the website at:
