GTL-Based Process Oil Shell Risella X helps SO.F.TER. GROUP reduce Fogging in TPE compounds by up to 60 percent
Gas-to-liquid (GTL) based process oil, Shell Risella X 430, enables SO.F.TER. GROUP, a global compound manufacturer to develop a new, high-performance thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds that offer up to 60 percent less fogging than conventional compounds. Fogging, which refers to the deposit of volatile components released from compounds under specific conditions on vehicles’ interior glass, is an important parameter in the automotive industry.
“The reduction of fogging has been high on our agenda for some time due to the stringent requirements imposed on original equipment manufacturers (OEMs),” said Alessandra Missiroli, TPE Research & Development Manager at, SO.F.TER. GROUP. “The new compounds made with Shell Risella X are substantially below the fogging limits set by the automotive industry, which offers a number of benefits.”
Shell Risella X oils are made using base oil derived from natural gas which is virtually free of impurities. This leads to final products with a distinct molecular structure, which can provide valuable benefits including extra purity and performance. Shell Risella X oils, for example, are colourless, almost odourless and contain virtually no sulphur, nitrogen or aromatics. They also have properties including low volatility, high flash point and high viscosity index.
Scientists at SO.F.TER. GROUP identified that Shell Risella X 430 could reduce fogging by up to 60 percent over conventional paraffinic medical white oils by creating three different TPE compound samples, one of which included the oil, and testing them in a third-party laboratory using the Volkswagen® 50180 method.
“The Shell Risella X is the key ingredient to the fogging performance increase of the TPE compounds created at SO.F.TER. GROUP,” added Missiroli. “Its UV stability is also comparable to the medical white oil based sample while demonstrating lower viscosity, which further sets compounds made with Shell Risella X apart from the rest.”
Following the discovery, SO.F.TER. GROUP is now investigating leveraging Shell Risella X to increase the range of products that it offers to the automotive sector.
