John Smythe appointed Chairman of CIMAC UK, National Member Association

Infineum’s Global Marine and Large Engine Technical Adviser, John Smythe, has been elected as the new Chairman of the UK National Member Association of CIMAC for 2015.

CIMAC, the International Council on Combustion Engines, is a global non-profit association consisting of member groups across 26 countries with the goal of bringing together key stakeholders to promote the exchange of scientific and technical information.

The National Member Association of CIMAC actively collaborates on internationally applied industry standards to promote the exchange of technological developments. The UK National Member Association is particularly focused on sharing best practice to promote marine engineering in the UK, as well as developing young engineering talent to meet the challenges of the future.

John, a chartered mechanical engineer, has been a member of the UK National Members Association committee since 2008, while Infineum has actively supported CIMAC since its formation.

Speaking after his appointment, John commented: “It is a real honour to have been elected as Chairman of

this prestigious group, and I would like to thank outgoing Chairman Humphrey Niven for his 16 years of service to the Association”.

“With my background in the sector, I am eager to promote the importance of lubricants to the marine engineering industry, not just as an add-on, but as an integral part of the technological innovations that are driving success across the UK and worldwide. They hold the potential to greatly improve the efficiency, cost effectiveness, and ecological impact on the industry and CIMAC’s members”.

CIMAC’s triannual Congress is set to return to Europe in 2016, with the last event having taken place in Shanghai in May 2013. This year’s event will take place in Helsinki from 6th-10th June.

appoints new Media Assistant

UKLA is pleased to welcome new employee Laurie McHale to the team at Lube Media in the newly created role of Media Assistant. Laurie graduated from the University of Leicester in 2014 with a first class honours degree in Film Studies and the Visual Arts, with a view to working on a periodical or other publication.

Commenting on joining the team, Laurie said: “Although I don’t have a lubricants background, this will soon be rectified when I attend the Certificate of Lubricants Competence (CLC) next year. Until then my first few weeks working at UKLA have been – to employ a cliché – something of a steep learning curve.

However, I view my new role working on Lube Magazine, ELID and associated media as a tremendous opportunity to embark

upon the kind of career I have always wanted, and, in return, I hope I will be able to turn my hand to making useful contributions to the continued growth of Lube Media.”

Laurie will be working directly under Editor of Lube Magazine; Suzy Jarman.
