New Engineering Scholarships supported by the

New Engineering Scholarships supported by the UKLA If you are interested in encouraging top science or engineering students aged 16-18 years to consider a career in the lubricants sector, then you might be interested in participating in the benefits that the United Kingdom Lubricants Association (UKLA) is now seeking from the renowned Arkwright Engineering Scholarships scheme.

Working in partnership with the Arkwright Scholarships Trust, the UKLA is sponsoring three students aged 16-18 years over the two year scholarship programme that will include access to work experience, information, advice and support specifically tailored to the lubricants sector.

The Arkwright Scholarships Trust has been awarding prestigious scholarships for over twenty years with the aim of encouraging high-potential young people to pursue careers in engineering, a key skills shortage area. The Trust already works with some of the leading names in industry such as Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Nissan, National Grid and Balfour Beatty, offering 400 scholarships a year by working in partnership with 1,000 schools. Scholars are selected after a rigorous selection process comprising: a detailed application form accompanied by a teacher’s reference; a two-hour aptitude exam; a 20-minute interview. Applicants have interests across the whole range of engineering topics such as chemical, mechanical, automotive, aeronautical, marine. Recommended candidates are carefully matched for their Scholarship to the needs of the sponsoring organisation.

The UKLA scholarships will be led by member companies committed to supporting a scholar over the two year period by offering access to up to five days work experience a year, mentoring throughout the programme, providing information on the lubricants sector and encouraging the scholar’s attendance at key events such as new product launches.

Benefits to participating member companies include • Direct support to high-potential future engineering leaders – your potential future employees!

• Gateway to an outstanding engineering pipeline of talent - 770 current Arkwright sixth form Scholars and over 2,900 alumni (many still in their undergraduate years at university) - Early identification of future undergraduates, higher apprentices and engineers

- Targeting of specific pools of talent including technical interests or geographic areas

- Opportunity to showcase the breadth of your engineering careers in your organisation

• Building the management & communication skills of your own employees through mentoring and helping to interview new candidates

• Providing great Recruitment, Corporate Social Responsibility & PR opportunities

The UKLA will meet the initial costs of setting up the scholarship programme with Arkwright. Included in this cost will be a financial award of £400 to the science or engineering department of the scholar’s school, and an award to each scholar of £600 to help with the cost of materials and equipment for their technical studies and their participation in the programme. There are no designated scholarship costs for participating member companies although incidental expenses such as the reimbursement of travel costs will be a local agreement between your company and the scholar.

To express an interest in the scholarship programme starting in September 2015, please write to the UKLA Secretariat at Berkhamsted House, 121 High Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, HP4 2DJ setting out how your company would support the scholar over the two year programme. Expressions of interest should be received no later than 30th April 2015.
