However, I’d always believed in going the extra mile, both for the company and for the personal satisfaction, and in finding ways to keep improving professionally. A year after winning, I was promoted by my employer to take on the role of managing the global marketing for metalworking fluids.

I very much enjoyed my time with my previous employer and was grateful for the opportunities they’d given me, but after seven years I felt it was ready to move onwards and upwards to a new role. I have recently joined Gulf as Brand and Commercial Excellence Manager, which presents new challenges. I will have more opportunity to contribute to the European business strategy and to introduce new ideas that make a difference. I am very proud and excited to be part of such an iconic brand, that is even recognised by everyone outside of our industry. As for the future, in the long-term I’d like to work in other countries and gain an international perspective of the lubricant business and other cultures. Watch this space!

2018: Ian Wright (Witham Group)

Winning the UKLA Young Employee of the Year award in 2018 was very much a highlight of my career. It was a privilege to be nominated by my employers at The Witham Group and it meant a great deal to have my achievements celebrated within the wider industry. It was an amazing experience to receive the award. As I did not attend university, all my expertise was learnt through practical experiences and learning opportunities provided by the company. I would not have received this award if it wasn’t for the company giving me the chance to develop my knowledge further and putting me forward to complete various courses.

It was great to be awarded the UKLA Young Employee of the Year award back in 2019, a great evening at the annual dinner and looking back it was a great opportunity to connect with peers just before the lockdowns imposed not long after. Following on from the award, my role in the procurement function at Morris Lubricants has been eventful to say the least. We’ve had Covid, Brexit, raw material shortages, disruptive weather events, logistical challenges and most recently the war in Ukraine. All these have contributed to what has been an extremely challenging time for supply chains across all industries, including our own, and I was lucky enough to get the chance to discuss different strategies to develop more resilient supply chains at the recent 26th ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference in June.

It was great to see a good number of young people in the industry at the conference and also at the recent UKLA networking events. The industry is going through a dynamic period with regards the move to more sustainable operations and the transition towards alternative fuels for vehicles so I hope the award continues to recognise accomplishments towards our common industry goals for years to come.

The opportunities that they have given me have helped me grow in confidence and have allowed me to develop my understanding further within the industry. Winning the UKLA Young Employee of the Year Award made me feel immensely proud of my accomplishments and it was an amazing feeling to have my hard work recognised.
