UKLA Young Employee of the Year 2022

Dr Emma Guthrie, Communications Manger, Lubricants & Energy and Amir Mansoor, Market Manager, Lubricants & Energy, IMCD UK

We have reached the mid-point of 2022 and our attention looks towards the final two quarters of the year. A highlight will be the UKLA Annual Dinner, of which IMCD UK is proud to be an award sponsor, supporting UKLA’s Young Employee of the Year.

Events such as the Annual Dinner provide an important opportunity for networking and social interaction. As an industry, we have demonstrated that remote working can be effective, but innovation, development and idea sharing is truly enhanced by in-person interactions, for which these types of occasions play an essential role.

Interaction within and between organisations is of particular value to those who are at the start of their career in the lubricants industry. This is a time when professional relationships are forged and the opportunity to develop personal networks to support a career pathway is of significant importance. We often speak of the challenges of encouraging new talents to our industry. Conferences, tradeshows, and industry events allow our next generation to consider the opportunities that our sector has to offer. Digital events such as webinars and online training do play an increasingly key role in this. However, the ability to spend time with your industry peers in technical and trend discussions, to be able to challenge and develop your own perspectives and ideas, can be best achieved when in the ‘real life’ company of others.

At IMCD UK, our important position as a speciality chemicals and ingredients distributor allows us to see emerging trends and challenges from the perspective of the whole supply chain, from manufacturer to formulator. We see the challenges of recruiting the right people into the right roles and the real and positive impact that companies can play when they encourage and develop their new talent. As a long-term supporter of UKLA, we see the benefit that the association’s in-person conferences, social

events, and training seminars can bring to those at all stages of their professional development, but especially to those in their formative working years.

For this reason, IMCD UK is proud to sponsor the UKLA’s Young Employee of the Year. Having supported the award for a number of years, we wanted to check on the career development of some previous winners, to find out how they progressed and to ask them to reflect on the impact of being celebrated by the industry in this way.

As well as looking back – we also look to the future and to this year’s dinner, when we will once again proudly sponsor this important award. We look forward to seeing the career progression of the new batch of nominees who will no doubt lead on the key challenges and opportunities that we see on the horizon for our industry.

2017: Sakar Pradhan (Q8)

Looking back, it was huge motivation just to be nominated for the UKLA Young Employee of the Year award. Even if I hadn’t won, my manager’s belief in me gave me a lot of confidence, but winning was definitely the icing on the cake. I felt a sense of accomplishment, became more engaged in my work, and realised that hard work brings rewards.
