EDITORIAL Half full or half empty...?
What a year! 2021 began with Covid 19 vaccination programmes being implemented across Europe and the world and is concluding in a similar vein. We’re not quite out of the woods yet. But there is a distinct sense that 2022 is bringing with it a renewed air of optimism. Something that has been precipitated by the intense negotiations and nail-biting conclusions of the Cop 26 Glasgow Climate Pact. Yes, we face an enormous collective challenge to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees above preindustrial levels to mitigate the impact of Climate Change, but the fact that diplomats from nearly 200 countries were able to come together, and have agreed to work towards a common goal, is something to applaud.
That same collaborative approach is evident in the lubricants sector. Sustainability is uppermost on the agenda of base oil suppliers, blenders, marketers, OEMs, distributors, chemical formulators and manufacturers. Regulation is driving innovation and in order to achieve the ambitious EU net zero emissions targets set for 2050, putting sustainability first and focusing the hearts and minds of everyone involved within our industry, is vital.
With this in mind, Lube magazine recently undertook its own Sustainability Survey, in collaboration with Kline & Company and supported by Portland Fuel, to examine how our industry is prioritising sustainability and the impact and implications this presents to the future of our sector. Conclusions will be shared at Lube magazine’s exciting industry-first Sustainability Conference for our sector. The one day event is being held on 9th March 2022 at London’s Institute of Directors. More information can be found on page 35 - Early Bird tickets for both UKLA members and non-members are now available and more information will be featured in the coming weeks on social media and in our February 2022 issue. 6 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.166 DECEMBER 2021
Meanwhile, in this issue, the benefits of re-refining are in the spotlight with articles from Itelyum, Avista Green, Slicker Recycling and NSI; with sustainability top of the mind, is re-refining the way to a circular economy? Vincent Bouillon of BFB Oil Research provides December’s Lube Tech ‘How to check the compatibility of hydraulic fluids through laboratory testing’ and Lubrizol looks at Marine Engines in the era of low-sulphur fuels. Elsewhere I interview UKLA’s new president, Andrew Goddard, on page 50 (and you can listen to my podcast interview with Andrew Goddard on
www.lube-media.com). All our regular articles are here and on page 32 Security Alliance Ltd offer insights on Combatting Counterfeit Lubricants.
For those who couldn’t make the event itself, we take a celebratory look at the UKLA Annual Dinner on page 40 – the gala evening took place on November 10th at London’s prestigious venue, 8 Northumberland Avenue. After a challenging Covid ‘gap year’ our international guests were definitely making up for lost time. Oh what a night!
Finally, a very personal thank you to our wonderfully loyal advertisers, sponsors, contributors and friends of Lube magazine and Lube media. You continue to place your trust in our publication and website, and have supported us so generously throughout the year. Thank you!
A very restful and joyous festive season to everyone... See you in 2022!
