UKLA President’s Report
Cop 26, the UN climate conference held in Glasgow in November, once again highlighted the importance of Sustainability to our industry and our society as a whole.
Not only in terms of how sustainable our products are, but also the impact on the environment from our supply chain operations.
Increasingly producers are looking to sustainable raw materials as sources of supply. From the components that go to make up finished lubricants to the types and form of our products’ packaging.
The lubricants sector has already embraced sustainability from using renewables as base stocks through to recycled and recyclable packaging for our products. Here I am reminded of the forthcoming plastic packaging tax to be introduced by UK Government in April 2022.
However each company’s journey to a more UEIL President’s Report
I would like to take the opportunity offered by this space to thank – personally and on behalf of the UEIL board – everybody, speakers, sponsors and the Secretariat, who contributed to make our very first virtual congress a success.
The congress planning and organisation has been a lot more complex than expected, but we are very proud to have offered a comprehensive programme with sustainability in the spotlight and a networking platform which offered a great – albeit virtual – opportunity to meet business partners, customers and suppliers.
The attendance and feedback we received exceeded our most optimistic expectations.
Nearly 450 participants from 60 countries registered for the congress, across the whole supply chain – from suppliers to OEMS, with some participants from the academic world. While we all missed being able to meet in person, there is no doubt that a virtual platform enabled reaching out to a broader audience, with many participants joining the UEIL congress for the first time. It was therefore particularly important to make sure that our congress lived up to our mission, to educate stakeholders on the value and benefit of the lubricants industry for the economy, society, and the environment.
We are proud of the outcome. The two keynote 4 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.166 DECEMBER 2021
sustainable future will be up to the individual company to ascertain the best way forward for themselves.
There can be no one size that fits all.
In its sustainability project, UEIL are working towards the development of a toolbox for companies to help them navigate their way to a more sustainable future.
In the UK, Lube magazine will be hosting a one day Sustainability conference on the 9th March 2022 in London. Details of this face-to-face and physical event can be found in this magazine. I would encourage you and your companies to attend to debate a key issue that will be with us for many decades to come.
A season’s greetings to all our members at this festive time of the year.
Andrew Goddard, UKLA President
speeches addressed important topics for the sustainable and successful growth of our industry – transformational leadership and the EU Green Deal. The roundtables were a great platform to discuss sustainability from many different angles. The support from ATC and ATIEL, who contributed with much appreciated presentations, was very valuable.
The success of the virtual congress gives us even more energy and motivation to work towards the 2022 Congress. The congress will take place in Athens on October 19 to 21 and will be focused on innovation: innovation across the whole value chain – from raw materials to production technologies, from product development to customer experience.
Our industry has taken giant leaps into the future and we believe that the 2022 congress will be a great opportunity to celebrate our industry’s achievements and be inspired to further progress on the innovation journey.
The programme is well underway, but there are still some open slots, so if you wish to contribute with a presentation, you are welcome to reach out to us with your proposal.
