The risks of exposure to mist can be minimised by introducing an effective risk management programme that follows the Health & Safety Executive’s approach to risk assessments based on Avoid, Protect and Check. For example, measures could include using a less harmful product (Avoid); using the correct PPE and effective ventilation (Protect) and introducing an effective fluid management system (Check).

Ultimately, the best way to minimise the risks associated with metalworking fluids is to choose a product that places a greater emphasis on health and safety, while still delivering performance and economy.

Public concern about the safety and environmental impact of metalworking fluids is driving the demand for alternative products. This is mirrored by increasingly stringent legislation in some countries to curtail the use of mineral-based metalworking fluids. China and the EU have set restrictions on the use of some chemicals and the USA has specified a minimum renewable content for a range of products.

This is fuelling the move towards developing more environmentally friendly metalworking products, including those based on water. Water-based

metalworking fluids bring many benefits. For operators, they provide a more pleasant working environment with no oil mist and a much lower level of misting overall. Cleanliness is exceptional. These fluids deliver long sump life without using boric acid derivatives and formaldehyde-donor biocides, and longer periods without bacterial growth.

Leading lubricant manufacturers around the world, including Q8Oils, are pushing the boundaries to develop new metalworking fluids that meet the highest safety and environmental standards. With the development of new technology containing synthetic performance additives and water as the base fluid, the absence of solvents resolves the issues of human exposure and clean air, and extensive testing shows there is no compromise in performance.

There seems little doubt that such products are the future for metalworking fluids.
