Water-based metalworking fluids: the future is clear

Health, safety and the environment are increasingly important considerations for metalworking fluids. As awareness of the impact of mineral oil-based metalworking fluids grows, it seems clear that the future lies in more environmentally friendly water-based fluids.


Although metalworking fluids can be based on mineral oils, natural oils or synthetic fluids, manufacturers have traditionally favoured mineral oils for their advantages of availability and price. Yet it is these products that are the prime target for concerns surrounding health, air pollution, disposal and recycling.


The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) of England and Wales has identified that there is a potential risk of ill health for operators exposed to oil and MWF mist.


Mist can be generated from both neat and soluble metalworking fluids during production processes; it may form when oil is sprayed at high pressure or connects with a high temperature surface during machining and vaporises.


The inhalation of mist is strongly associated with cancer and occupational asthma. There is also a risk of lung disease and breathing problems, caused by chemicals and micro-organisms irritating the lungs, and this is exacerbated in those who suffer from asthma. The risk of exposure is higher indoors, where conditions favour the generation and collection of mist particles.


Employers are responsible for controlling exposure to hazardous substances and suppliers are charged with reporting them, but the hazards associated with metalworking fluid mist are less obvious.
