Caroline worked as a Waterstones bookseller, and as a book publicist before becoming a freelance writer in 1997. The Bookseller’s non-fiction previewer since 2000, she has judged numerous book prizes, including chairing the panel for the 2022 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. Programme Director of Stroud Book Festival, Caroline is also a Royal Literary Fund Writing For Life Fellow, supporting writing skills within the NHS.

Books serve many purposes: to educate, to inspire, to entertain. This week’s selection of non-fiction titles succeed in doing all of the above, while also reassuring us that even in politically turbulent times, publishing will endure

I hope my June non-fiction preview will serve as a reminder of just how much terrific writing comes to us from across the Atlantic. From Boston neurologist Pria Anand’s beautifully written The Mind Electric: Stories of the Strangeness and Wonder of Our Brains (Virago) and Jeremy Atherton Lin’s queer resilience story Deep House: The Gayest Love Story Ever Told (Allen Lane), to Krystal Evans’ striking memoir The Hottest Girl at Burn Camp (Monoray) and the great Barbara Demick’s Daughters of the Bamboo Grove (Granta), American writers are such an important part of the UK non-fiction landscape.
