Bunny vs Monkey vs Dog Man: Jamie Smart and Dav Pilkey dominate
G
iven their domin- ance of the bestseller charts, you might be forgiven for thinking that Jamie Smart
and Dav Pilkey are the only illustra- tors producing graphic novels right now. While they do take up a lot of space at the top of NielsenIQ BookData’s Children’s Comic Strip Fiction and Graphic Novels cate- gory, they are far from being the only ones. Comics and graphic novels hit
an all-time high in 2024, with 4,201 different ISBNs selling just under 2.6 million books and delivering total value sales of £20.2m, numbers that are up considerably on 2023: volume grew 25.7% while value rose 24%.
Compare that with 10 years
previously, when only 271,930 books were sold in this category – with 2014 seeing a quarter of its sales coming from Tintin alone, while Asterix and the other resi- dents of Gaul supplied another 20% – to a total of £2m. Both brands are still doing relatively well, though Hergé has seen his sales drop 46.1% to 38,057 copies sold in 2024, while René Goscinny has seen a decline of 40.6% over the last decade to 31,866 copies. If Asterix and Tintin are no
longer in command of comics and graphic novels, then who is? This year has seen a good start
for the category, with sales of £8.9m up to the end of April – 30.1% more than the same period
Smart and Pilkey account for 71.6% of the category’s sales – a much bigger proportion than Tintin and Asterix managed a decade ago
