bookshops were having a “staycation boom”, with takings and footfall hugely up owing to changes in pandemic travel. Less international travel appears to have been a boon for UK booksell- ers: just under £29.7m was sold through the TCM last week, broadly in line with £29.97m earned in 2020’s August bank holiday week. The five August bank holidays from 2015 to 2019 all earned between £25.5m and

£26.8m, meaning the pandemic has given the home market about a 15% boost in 2020 and 2021. The devil is in the detail. BookScan is forbidden from breaking down the numbers by retail channel and the sales surge might have had winners and losers. If our reported indie boost was repli- cated across the country, then it might not have been the best week, say, for retailers which have a huge presence in airports.
For the first time since 2016, the year-to-date LibScan chart is not topped by a Lee Child title—and its successor may not be a surprise...

top the presses, because the LibScan year-to-date lending chart is not topped
by a Lee Child title. This has not happened since 2016, during the unstoppable trajectory of Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train through both the Nielsen BookScan and LibScan library lending charts. For 2021, Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club has pipped Child’s first Jack Reacher title written with his brother Andrew to the LibScan top spot. This, of course, will come

as no surprise to anyone who has so much as glanced at The Bookseller’s charts section in the past year. In hardback, The Thursday Murder Club sold a reported million copies (according to publisher Penguin Random House) and swiped the 2020 Christmas Number One, becoming the first début fiction title to do so. The paperback, published in May, has so far notched up eight weeks in the Official UK Top 50 spot, returning to the number one across August—and it could potentially be knocked from the summit by its own sequel, 16th September- published The Man Who Died Twice, in an undeniably David Walliams-esque move. Of course, the
furore surrounding The Thursday Murder Club in the BookScan charts has had a knock-on effect on the LibScan lending charts. It’s not often that librarygoers are drawn in by hype, as the five years since The Girl on the Train’s
