BOOK OF THE YEAR Fiction

Philippa Gregory’s Boleyn Traitor, the story of Jane Boleyn’s survival at the centre of the treacherous Tudor court, has triumphed in this hard-fought category. The novel offered a “strong” commentary on power in an “important” act of revision, the panel agreed. An “absolute belter of a book”, “fresh” and “compulsive”, said the judges. Gregory’s return to the Boleyn family after nearly a decade gave HarperFiction the opportunity to reinvigorate her brand and bring new readers into the fold. The judges agreed that the team launched an “impressive” and “energetic” campaign that made Gregory and Boleyn Traitor unmissable. HarperFiction targeted every possible reader, from existing fans to readers of political thrillers and fantasy, a strategy that started with the “beautiful” and intriguing book jacket, which became a touchstone of their campaign. Ten theatre events, a launch celebration overlooking the Tower of London and numerous broadcast interviews helped deliver a strong sales uplift and brought Gregory to the fore, successfully dethroning the competition.
