THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS Book of the Year
The final judging panel crowned the Non-Fiction: Narrative winner, Nobody’s Girl, as The British Book Awards’ Overall Book of the Year. For the judges, Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s memoir was a “testament to the importance of serious non-fiction”. One judge said: “I am a better person for having read this book.” It was Giuffre’s express wish that Nobody’s Girl still be released after her death, and
Doubleday set the “gold standard” for how to publish “bravely” and with “integrity”. With only six weeks to create a campaign, “the team did an incredible job at honouring Giuffre’s memory, her story and her words”. Doubleday spoke for Giuffre when she could no longer speak for herself and Nobody’s Girl is a reminder of how vital it is to hear from the victims and survivors of abuse. It stands as “the most important book” of 2025 for its bravery and as a “powerful statement of what books can do”. The discussion was chaired by Alice O’Keeffe, The Bookseller’s head of books. The
panel comprised authors Lou Beckett and Saara El-Arifi; Bea Carvalho, head of books at Waterstones; arts and books journalist Lisa O’Kelly; broadcaster Ashley James; and Chrissy Ryan, founder of BookBar.
