Welcome to The British Book Awards – its 36th edition. Coming midway through the National Year of Reading, these awards have a special role. And yes, that does mean we Go All In. You stand for reading and its value to society, and we stand with you, and that is a message to amplify far and wide. But – as we know – we were always “all in”. Our winners,


from Michael Rosen to Sally Smith, Pushkin Press to Griffin Books, showcase everything that is good about this industry. Tonight, we recognise, too, recently passed writers Sophie Kinsella, Jilly Cooper and Joanna Trollope (p19), whose contributions to the sector can now never be diminished. Meanwhile, our two Freedom to Publish winners (p62-3) could not have felt more important – silenced voices turned up loud by the book business.
