This is the first time a retailer in Ireland has won the title of Independent Bookshop of the Year. Hugely creative, passionate and ambitious, Dublin’s The Gutter Bookshop is a model of how independents on both sides of the Irish Sea can survive amid challenges and thrive. Trading in Ireland hasn’t always been easy since Gutter opened in 2009. But through a combination of outstanding service, a welcoming, comfortable environment and carefully chosen range, it has developed a devoted following. Dublin cultural life. More than 200 events, including an imaginative “Blind Date with a Book” night, pulled in new shoppers last year. It has helped The Gutter Bookshop to successive years of sales increases, and to open a second store in the well-to-do Dublin suburb of Dalkey in 2013. “Dublin isn’t exactly lacking in bookshops and The Gutter Bookshop punches way above its weight,” judges commented. “To be opening a second shop shows it must be doing lots of things right.” The Gutter Bookshop wins a cheque for £5,000
