EDITOR OF THE YEAR
WINNER: JULIET MABEY ONEWORLD
For a small independent publisher to win one Man Booker Prize is an outstanding achievement—but to pick up two in a row is the stuff of dreams. That, though, has been the achievement of Oneworld and its co-founder and lead editor Juliet Mabey. Oneworld had been plugging away in independent publishing for nearly 30 years before its Man Booker double, and fiction has only been a belated addition to its core non-fiction. Mabey’s literary instincts have transformed its sales and profile, both in the UK trade and overseas. “Juliet is a maverick—an editor who is bold and clear in her decision-making,” judges said. “She spots the potential in books and authors that many others do not.” She also makes the decisions. They also admired Mabey’s achievements in diversifying UK publishing, by giving voice to BAME, début and little-known authors from overseas. Her Booker winners—Marlon James, the first novelist she signed back in 2009; and Paul Beatty, signed with an unpromising track record of three out-of-print novels and rejections from some 20 publishers—are just two examples of her daring, risk-taking approach. “She’s ground-breaking . . . bringing things into the UK market from around the world that we would never otherwise see,” said the judges. Mabey’s next goals are to break Oneworld into crime fiction, children’s and academic publishing through new imprints—and few would bet against her achieving success there too.
