ood years for the trade do not make easy years for the judges of the British Book Awards. Across the board this has been one of the hardest seasons in which to select the winners, with standout performances from books as diverse as The Essex Serpent and The Sidemen, companies from the largest such as Penguin Random House through to the smallest such as Jessica Kingsley Publishers, retailers from Waterstones to the National Trust, and from individuals such as booksellers Rebecca


MacAlister, Jo Heygate, agents Rory Scarfe and Juliet Mushens, and editors Carole Tonkinson and Rowland White. To name just a few. On the following pages you will read about the winners and about those that fell at the last hurdle: in truth, in a year when book sales rose and great books were well read, we were all blessed. This year’s awards bring together the trade categories and the books under one new name, The British Book


Awards, a.k.a. the Nibbies. The British Book Awards were launched in 1990 by Publishing News founder Fred Newman, with Faber the first winner of Publisher of the Year. The Bookseller launched its awards, The Bookseller

Retail Awards, in 2005. Following Newman’s death in 2008, The Bookseller created The Bookseller Industry Awards by merging the Retail Awards and the trade categories spun out of The British Book Awards. The last British Book Awards took place in 2009. In 2016 The Bookseller Industry Awards became The British Book Industry Awards, including, for the first time, four new book categories along with a host of trade-specific gongs. A simpler way of putting it is just to say that the Nibbies are back! Refitted for purpose for the 21st century and spruced up for the modern book business, in all of its dizzying colours. But credit to Fred, he started it all and we are grateful to his family for the opportunity to unify the awards under one name again. I should also thank all of the sponsors, whose support is vital in making the magic happen, the judges (see p04–05), and The Bookseller’s team of enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who put in the hard graft, from c.e.o. and publisher Nigel Roby downwards.
