Presented for the second time in 2017, this award honours retailers that open up new channels to market for publishers—of which the Royal Horticultural Society is a textbook example. Founded more than two centuries ago, the RHS
naturally has huge strength in gardening books across its four shops, but its range goes a lot further. The retail operation at its flagship Wisley site now resembles a first-rate bookshop more than it does a typical visitor attraction. The stock now takes in related areas such as nature, wildlife, cooking and ecology, and there’s an extensive choice of gift titles and children’s books too, plus space for genres such as history, science, fiction and sport.
KEY STRENGTHS
◆ DEFINITIVE RANGE OF TITLES FOR ENTHUSIASTS OF GARDENING AND RELATED AREAS ◆ EXTENSIVE STOCK OF OTHER GENRES THAT IS 10,000 TITLES STRONG AT THE FLAGSHIP WISLEY SITE ◆ SUPERB CURATION, PRESENTATION AND PROMOTION OF TITLES, ONLINE AS WELL AS IN-STORE ◆ BEST OF THE GROWING NUMBER OF NON-TRADITIONAL ROUTES AVAILABLE TO PUBLISHERS

Waterstones, Borders and independents, buying locally as well as centrally, add to the sense of a fully-fledged bookselling operation. Merchandising is also excellent, with attractive displays, regularly changing promotions and a Christmas catalogue. Events, online sales and pop-ups at various gardening festivals are all just as professionally run, and it is an active supporter of the Booksellers Association and initiatives such as World Book Day and Books Are My Bag too. “RHS has a bookselling operation that any pure
bookshop would be proud of,” the judges commented. “Any publisher that doubts the value of non-traditional channels like this should sit up and take notice.”
