THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS JUDGES BOOKS OF THE YEAR JUDGES
TRICIA ADAMS Director School Library Association
PHILIP JONES EDITOR THE BOOKSELLER
Sixty individual judges helped select the winners at this year’s British Book Awards. Repeat after me, 60 judges. I’d like to thank each and every one of them: we take the judging process incredibly seriously, with the sifting of entries beginning in February and the judging days taking place in March and April. We ask each judge to review the submissions and books ahead of the judging days, and come to the sessions with a probing and open mind. For the trade awards there is a blind vote, meaning that even the judges won’t know who has won until the awards are bestowed on the night; the book judges settled on a winner through collective agreement (and negotiation). I’d like to thank the chairs of each of their respective categories, and Cathy Rentzenbrink who, as the overall chair of the books categories, led her team with real brio.
