RIGHTS PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR SPONSORED BY: FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR

WINNER: KATE HIBBERT LITTLE, BROWN BOOK GROUP

Five years on the shortlist is a long time to wait for this award, but the time has finally come for Little, Brown Book Group joint rights director Kate Hibbert. This is not a lifetime achievement award though— simply reward for a magnificent 2016 in which she steered Little, Brown to a best ever rights year, notching up an average of nearly three deals a day in more than 40 different languages. Hibbert herself was responsible for many of the biggest of them, especially in the key US market and most notably with one of her personal favourites, Francesca Hornak’s Seven Days of Us. Spain and Korea were among other standout territories. Her success is down to a combination of passion for her authors and a tenacity in negotiations, and to a knack for pairing the right book with the right editor. She is close to the ground too, intimately involved in the publishing process well beyond her rights remit— and a friendly face amid the hurly-burly of rights trading at book fairs.

It all makes her hugely liked and respected by her colleagues and counterparts around the world. “Her professionalism, intelligence, wit, grace and whole persona impress me more each time we speak, write or meet,” says one overseas publisher. The judges concurred. “These figures are astonishing in the current market,” they said. “Kate is a consistently good rights pro, but even by her own high standards she excelled in 2016.”
