ince our focus on sustainability last April, David Attenborough spoke at Glastonbury about plastic pollution in the oceans, the Extinction Rebellion took over London and cities across the UK in protest, and 17-year-old climate campaigner Greta Thunberg addressed the United Nations. To say that sustainability is a hot topic is an understatement.

Rob Cole is the founder of Sheffi eld Sustainable Kitchens

Many companies are now joining the eco movement, but Sheffi eld Sustainable Kitchens (SSK) has always had the environment at the heart of its business – since it was started 12 years ago by Rob Cole. “We are not jumping on the bandwagon. Sustainability has always been in our name for a reason. We have learnt a lot and developed over the past 12 years. That makes us stand ahead of the crowd,” says Cole. “We have recognised that shift in our clients, too. Sustainability is important for more people compared with a few years ago. It is great for us, and it is reassuring that this is where things are going. There has been a real [growth in] consumer demand over the past fi ve years – for example, what David Attenborough has done about plastic in the oceans and Greta Thunberg with raising the profi le of climate change. Now clients are demanding a more sustainable product across the board.” It is undeniable that there is a lot of waste generated by the kitchen industry – from plastic packaging and skips full of old, discarded kitchens. Cole was frustrated at how he saw the industry treating sustainability and decided there had to be a better way to run a kitchen company.
