and Kohler’s Katalyst collection of shower heads, which feature an air-induction system designed to make each drop ‘feel bigger’ and ‘perform better’.

In recent years, Kohler has also launched Environmental Product Declaration (EDP) labels that allow the brand to be transparent on the make-up of products, how they are manufactured, what materials they contain and where these materials came from. Amanda Turner at Kohler UK, comments: “By gauging this information at fi rst concept stage, we can determine the product’s environmental impact from raw material to the end of its life. This in turn guides our decisions about materials components and supplier sources. We can generate Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for more than 1,000 products and more than 10,000 individual SKUs, which we believe is the most of any company in the building products industry.”

Water-saving

Shower loos and rimless loos have also grown considerably in popularity in recent years, because of their sustainability credentials and the extra levels of hygiene they offer. Again, water-saving technology and product design have improved signifi cantly, meaning that WCs can be effectively fl ushed using as little as 2.5 litres of

water, and given that the average household fl ushes the toilet 7.7 times a day, and that a standard model is the main culprit for wasting water, this is encouraging news.

Vitra marketing manager Margaret

Talbot comments: “Dual (2.5/4 litre) fl ushing WCs are among our most popular eco-friendly products and all of our standard-height, wall-hung frames come with dual-fl ush function as standard. Being able to demonstrate tangible savings in water use is an easy way for consumers to save this valuable resource and save money on

their household bills.

“All Vitra bathroom products are manufactured in Vitra factories, so fall under the Blue Life philosophy of our parent company, Turkey’s Eczacibas¸i Group. The group is committed to the highest environmental standards across all of its building businesses.” Duravit’s rimless toilets, meanwhile, have an open rim design, so there is nowhere for dirt to hide. The water fl ow is directed fi rst as a horizontal arc and then vertically, which cleans the entire inner surface of the bowl without splashing prior to fl ushing, which is

said to deliver perfect and hygienic results even at 4.5 litres.

Shower toilets are suitable for anyone who appreciates hygiene, comfort and design. Consumers who traditionally bought bidets are becoming aware of the benefi ts of upgrading to a more comfortable product, such as the SensoWash Starck f from Duravit. This is available in two options and both can be operated via smart technology either via remote control or an app on the user’s mobile phone.
