The biggest challenge on this installation was removing the existing brick pier from the kitchen, which was supporting steel beams above. Our client had never been happy with this pier and how it obstructed their view of the garden. To be able to remove the pier, we had to contract in a structural engineer to advise on the options available. We agreed with him that while some structural support would need to remain, the best way forward was to replace the pier with a steel circular support that would be much less bulky. Before we could start the kitchen install, we had to first undertake this work. This involved removing the pier by supporting the weight of the house with Acrow props, while we dug footings for the new, slimmer steel column, which was welded to the existing steel work of the house. With that work out of the way, the actual furniture install was straightforward, and the client was delighted with the finished results and the new, barely noticeable, structural support.
