Making Shops Safe

Keeping helicopters flying during COVID-19 has required a lot of changes to maintenance facilities to ensure that they comply with social distancing and other pandemic-prevention protocols. At the same time, the changes can’t be so radical that work cannot get done. Safety has to be balanced with productivity.

Fortunately, companies such as Aerometals have been able to strike this balance. “Making room in our shop to increase physical distancing, along with adding janitorial staff to ensure a higher level of safety by cleaning and sanitizing surfaces that we all come in contact with, was and is a primary focus,” says Lorie Symon, CEO/president of Aerometals. “We feel that it’s very important to have employees that are confident that their work environment is as safe as possible, and this also improves productivity.”

Following COVID-19 safety protocols conscientiously has paid off

for Aerometals.

“With these comprehensive initiatives, we’ve been fortunate to not have an outbreak with over 160 employees at our facility,” Symon says. “Only two employees have contracted COVID outside the workplace, and with our employee safeguards, we were able to identify and isolate the employees prior to entering the building. In short, our efforts have paid off by keeping us all safer, and we’re proud of this accomplishment.”

The same dedication to safety has kept Precision Aircraft Services (PAS) operating without incident during the entire pandemic. “So far so good. We have not had any employees test positive for COVID-19,” says Mark Tyler, PAS’s vice president and general manager. “In fact, we have not had anyone with any seasonal illness. The team has really dug deep inside to persevere in very challenging and unprecedented times.”
