Messy play, big benefits

It’s also a brilliant time to incorporate a bit of messy play, creating more sensory experiences than you can typically achieve in the classroom. Crinkling leaves, squishing mud, and mixing up nature potions – it all lets kids get hands-on with their creativity in a safe environment (especially when their overalls protect their uniforms!).

Winter wonders and chilly

curiosity Although autumn and winter can be a tad chilly, the cold months bring us snow and ice, which are fascinating for young children. Some might not have even seen thick snow before, so it’s a perfect opportunity for them to explore the new textures and enjoy a wonderful, chilly sensory experience. You can also begin to introduce them to cause and effect, such as how ice makes things slippery, and teach your class to be cautiously curious, too.

Growing minds with gardening

For slightly older children, you could talk about growing vegetables and herbs, taking them through the steps of setting up a small garden. Then, as the weeks progress, they can head back outside to check up on what they’ve planted and appreciate something they’ve grown with their own two hands.

Rain or shine, keep exploring

Don’t let a little wet weather deter you from taking your little learners outside. Those ‘miserable’ weather days offer a fresh perspective and a chance to bring your activities to life in new and exciting ways using the natural elements around you. With the right outdoor equipment (and clothing!), you’ll have your class engaged, curious, and always enjoying themselves come rain or shine.
