Getting your outdoor areas ready for winter

As the seasons begin to shift and cold weather returns, outdoor learning calls for a little extra care and creativity. Ensuring children stay warm and dry, protecting well-loved resources from the elements, and preparing for winter’s unique challenges are all key to keeping outdoor spaces safe, engaging, and accessible. With smart clothing choices, clever storage solutions, and thoughtful adjustments to activity zones, you can create an environment where learning continues to thrive – no matter the weather.

Plan for the seasons to come

Taking a walk around your space is a good first approach to planning for the colder months. Look for areas that might become soggy, icy, or overly muddy, and consider whether they need to be adapted or if a shift in the activity area is required. Watch for paths that become slippery, places where light fades earlier, or even spots with pooling water (so you can plan in some fun, muddy puddle jumping!). A small plan goes a long way in keeping learning flowing and ensuring you prioritise safety. Once the weather changes, it’s helpful to have daily “weather checks” to clear or mark any hazards, helping everyone feel secure.

Dress for comfort and confidence

Choosing proper clothing for children and adults can have a huge impact on outdoor activities. Waterproof coats, trousers, or dungarees keep children dry and warm, allowing them to focus on enjoying themselves while playing outdoors. It might be helpful to provide extra hats, gloves, scarves, and wellies in various sizes for all children, ensuring that no one misses out on the fun. A space where clothes can dry safely is worth thinking about, too, as it helps prevent slipping.
