Autumn offers children the opportunity to explore and discover a range of seasonal plants, insects and natural materials.

As the leaves begin falling off the trees, many new experiences await little explorers outside. Whether it’s the crunch of fallen leaves, spiky conkers popping up all around or our squirrel friends preparing to hibernate, there’s something new for them to discover every time they step outdoors.

This time of year also provides wonderful opportunities for children to get creative with crafts and enjoy autumn-themed activities. Here are some to get you inspired...

2 2. Crinkle Leaf Kebabs

Head outdoors and have each child hunt for a stick and leaves in assorted colours and sizes. Then, ask them to thread the leaves onto their stick, creating a crinkly leaf kebab and practising fine-motor and hand-eye coordination skills. You could extend the activity by asking the children to sort their leaves by colour, shape, or texture before threading, sparking early classification and patterning skills. Or, for an added layer of creativity, children could decorate their sticks with Cotton String (718300) or Paint (713120), turning their kebabs into seasonal sculptures.

1. Autumn Impressions

Cover a tuff tray in sand and arrange natural materials such as acorns, pinecones, conkers, leaves and twigs (bonus points if you use materials the children foraged themselves!). Let the children explore the materials freely and see what patterns they create, adding in some Yellow Door Rollers (427313) for extra fun and seasonal patterns. As the children pick up materials and roll them around, they’ll practice fine motor control and coordination while building early mathematical concepts such as shapes and patterns.
