Embracing the British weather
Curiosity. A child’s invisible best friend, here to help them learn, grow, and discover the amazing world around them. Given the endless source of learning opportunities the great outdoors has to offer young minds, there’s no better place for a child to explore and be curious than in nature’s classroom.
Although British weather has a reputation for being unpredictable (like heavy showers after a morning full of sun), it can actually benefit your little ones. Wind, rain, sunshine, and snow all offer a wealth of different sensory experiences to enjoy, while also bringing the seasons to life in a way that can be physically seen, touched, and heard.
In the words of legendary British fellwalker Alfred Wainwright, ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing,’ which is why equipping children with the right outdoor gear can ensure they can enjoy outdoor activities all year round.
Learning through nature
Outdoor learning provides an opportunity to expand on topics through new sights, sounds, and textures. You can add a spin to mark-making by letting children take bark rubbings or pick out their favourite leaves to trace, showing how the natural world is unique in many different ways. That’s not to mention all the bugs and creepy crawlies they can observe outside, learning about habitats and being respectful of creatures both great and small.
“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Alfred Wainwright
