Bring your small world to life

The outdoor environment naturally provides lots of materials for creating fantastic backdrops for small world play. Encourage children to search for items that could serve as backgrounds for their stories. You might like to keep fabric nearby to represent the sea, sky, or land. Children can then arrange sticks, stack stones, pile leaves, or heap up sand to create the scenery for their small world props. Add painted clouds, prints, play dough models, and other elements to make the storytelling environment even richer.

What you’ll need

Save for another day!

Keep a record of the wonderful variety of small worlds created in your setting. Encourage the children to be the record keepers themselves. Have an iPad, digital camera, or similar device on hand so at the end of each session, the children can take a photograph

of their small world. These photos can be compiled into a small world, big ideas album, serving as a reminder of the worlds they created, inspiration for new ideas, and a source of pride as they share their creations.

What you’ll need

• 820897 - Large Play Cave • 820896 - Large Play Iceberg • 820898 - Large Play Tree Stump • 820895 - Large Play Waterfall

Do you hear what

I hear? Explore the use of audio to enhance small world play. Provide children with the means to record their stories, helping them focus on narrative structure and character development alongside their imaginative play. The simplicity of the Little People resources allows children to focus on the interactions and relationships between the characters. After rehearsing a story, encourage them to record it for your setting's audio library. Rattles, shakers, chime bars, and environmental sounds can be added as sound effects to enrich the listening experience.
