Messing with mud

Mud kitchens have become popular resources in early years settings. However, even without a dedicated kitchen, you can gather old pots, pans, or kitchen utensils, find a soft, muddy spot, and let children take the lead in imaginative play. This can be done at home and in early years settings.

Our "Hocus Pocus Potions" activity (number 17) is a great way to introduce mud play. There is no right or wrong way to engage with mud in play, and while it may get messy, the beauty of it is that it is freely available all around the world! The unique properties of mud offers a tactile and sensory experience, allowing children to mould, squish, squelch, shape, and even let their creations dry out.

Through mud play, children develop fine motor skills, mathematical and scientific understanding, and it serves as a wonderful outlet for imagination and creativity.

Ready to get started with 50 Things to Do?

50 Things to Do is currently available in 21 areas. Many early years settings in those areas use it to support their work and encourage parents' involvement in their child's learning.

Recently, practitioners using 50 Things introduced the concept of a "Take Home Bear," encouraging families to try out the 50 Things activities with their child and their cuddly friend. Families were encouraged to use the local links section in the app to enhance their days out, such as exploring The Room on the Broom story trail at Anglers Country Park.

Take a look at the map, and if you find that 50 Things is available in your area, send an email to info@50things.org.uk and we will connect you with your local representative.
