t Gateway to new
worlds Stories can unfold not only anywhere but at any time as well. How might a story differ in spring compared to autumn? How could a tale evolve in rain or snow versus sunshine? Don’t limit your outdoor small world play to dry weather days only. Let it be a gateway to new worlds, whether on wet days, foggy mornings, or snowy afternoons. Imagine frosty fairy tales, wet woodland stories, and icy fables. Just make sure to dress warmly and stay dry!

Small world, big ideas
Watching children engaging in small world play, either independently or in groups, is a delightful experience. As they dive into storytelling, their interactions with others thrive, their language abilities grow, and they learn the value of working together. Moving small world play outdoors injects fresh energy into the activity, opening up limitless possibilities. So, without further ado, here are five outdoor small world activities you can take into the big wide world.
To outside and beyond
Outdoor small world play offers numerous benefits and can be enriched with additional elements. Ask yourself: If the theme of the activity took place outside, what might I add to enhance the play? For woodland play, try using bark, leaves, cones, and moss. And for enchanted world play, you might like to enhance this with flowers, blossoms, and conifer sprigs. Aim to provide contrasting sensory experiences such as including dry soil or sand alongside mud and wet sand. For polar play, try water and ice. The more sensory learning opportunities, the better.
