About us

50 Things to Do Before You're 5 is a free programme for practitioners and parents that presents a bucket list of 50 activities for children to do before they turn five. The program was created based on the simple belief that a childhood filled with fun, affordable experiences both indoors and outdoors can have a life-changing impact. The activities are available on multiple platforms, including an app, website, printed resources and inspiration on social media.

At 50 Things, we have always been strong advocates of outdoor learning. Especially in the post-Covid era, where lockdowns have been seen as detrimental to children's well-being and development, it becomes even more important that children, practitioners, and families spend time outdoors!

The benefits of outdoor play

Regular outdoor play brings physical benefits, such as the development of gross and fine motor skills. It also fosters cognitive growth by encouraging problem-solving, language development, and communication skills. Furthermore, outdoor play provides many opportunities for social skill development.

Engaging in playful learning outdoors not only benefits physical well-being but also has a positive impact on mental well-being. By playing outdoors and

staying active, your brain releases feel-good neurotransmitters, known as endorphins. And remember, it’s not just for the children, it has the same impact on adults, parents, and teachers.

Connecting with nature

Building connections with the natural environment from a young age and developing a sense of care for the environment is known to promote continued engagement and respect for the environment as adults.

At 50 Things to Do, we recognise that by encouraging parents and caregivers to explore and engage with nature, we support children's positive relationships with the environment. Simple activities like bug-hunting (number 9) provide children with opportunities to develop skills for respectful interaction with other creatures and display empathy.
