By Amanda Hubball - Deputy Head at Alfreton Nursery School
Outdoor education holds great significance at Alfreton Nursery School. Our commitment to a natural approach in the early years environment is deeply embedded in every aspect of our school, and we have developed a unique approach to sustainable education.
Let us introduce our STEM Hive… An exciting part of our commitment to sustainable education is the outdoor STEM Hive. Dedicated to environmental education, this outdoor space helps children to understand the difference between the natural and industrial worlds.
The design of the STEM Hive is thoughtfully crafted to reflect its sustainable purpose. The materials used in its construction are either recycled or donated to the school. Our community members take pleasure in seeing their cherished possessions contribute to the education of young minds, while resources that would otherwise end up in landfills are repurposed to ignite learning and captivate children's sense of wonder.
Within our Hive, there are four main areas. The central space serves as a hub for adult-led teaching and learning, encouraging children to collaborate and engage in critical thinking. Additionally, three other pods provide opportunities for exploring deforestation, pollution, and global warming. These concepts are not only taught through theoretical knowledge but also through children's real-life experiences, expanding their understanding of the world.
