Climate change experiment
This is a simple way of introducing the topic of climate change and demonstrating the impact it is having on animals such as polar bears and their habitat, and will create opportunities to discuss what causes climate change and the our planet.
What you’ll need
• A deep clear container or tray • • Ice cubes • 831964 - Wildlife of the Polar Region
Method
1. Fill the tray quarter full of water and add 1-2 drops of blue food colouring.
2. Add the ice cubes to the tray - building them up to create a surface area that the polar bears can stand on.
3. Add the polar bears to their icy habitat.
4. To simulate the impact of melting land ice due to climate change, either leave the tray outside in the sun or add warm water to the tray to gradually melt the ice. Watch how the space the polar bears had to stand on becomes smaller and smaller as the water level rises.
Pollution jars
Make a simple pollution jar to help illustrate why we are going to get wet as their inquisitive minds try to understand why their favourite sweetie wrapper has ended up in their little ocean.
What you’ll need

Method
1. Add a cup of sand to the bottom of the jar then layer top.
2. While the sand is settling, tie the jute string round the sea creatures ready to put in the jar.
3. Add the sea creatures to the jar then add the rubbish.
