Protecting the wildlife in your garden

Go wild with your outdoor space! Large or small, your garden can be assembled into a network of natural havens for the wildlife encouraging an urban oasis. There are so many activities your little ones can be involved in. They will just love to see the impact they can have in their garden. Invite wildlife into their space from a few simple recycled resources.

Protect hedgehogs and build them a home from recycled materials

There are plenty of options – using discarded wood, logs, plastic storage boxes or cardboard boxes. For this activity we’ve decided to use one of our cardboard boxes from our recycling bin.

What you’ll need

• A big, thick cardboard box • Some torn newspapers • Clean dry grass or straw • Dry leaves • Plastic bags • Paints, paper, PVA glue, safety scissors (if your little one’s want to decorate the home)

• Food – cat/dog meat in jelly (not gravy), cat biscuits, hedgehog biscuits (available in garden centres) and water (really important for rehydration).

Please don’t leave bread or milk out!!

• Decorate your hedgehog house.

• Put some torn newspapers inside with clean, dry grass or straw on top and tuck the box near a hedge, if possible with the entrance facing south. The top of the box should then be covered with a small piece of plastic sheeting, for example an “opened up” old carrier bag. Twigs should be put all round to make a dome and then covered with dry grass and leaves.

• Finally, put your food in a bowl to the back of your hedgehog house.

Remember • Clear out the hedgehog house once a year (late March – early April) to prevent the build-up of pests. Do not clean it out if a hedgehog is in residence though!
