Primary science inspiration with Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach

YPO has joined forces with Roald Dahl and is joining in on the 2018 celebrations of his first children’s novel, James and the Giant Peach. See how these fun lesson plans can help you meet your Ofsted objectives, as well as provide you with creative science lessons to keep pupils engaged.

Here’s a taster of how you can deliver these great lessons to cover some of our favourite science curriculum topics…

Exploring habitats

Understanding habitats, where things live and the minibeasts that live in our gardens and playgrounds are all topics which lend themselves very well to outdoor learning. Why not use the lesson plan Happy Habitats where your pupils can find out more about where James’ travel companions would live? You can take the children on a bug hunt, collecting the bugs in a magnifier pot. Look under logs, leaves and stones, sweep long grass with a net and shake tree branches to catch insects in a beating sheet.

Recording science

James’ lesson plans make recording science fun with its ‘We are scientists’ section. You can cover objectives such as setting up fair tests, reporting on findings from tests, including oral and written explanation and measuring, recording and presenting data. You can do fun experiments like finding out how many ways you can slow down a peach without stopping it and taking part in the fruit Olympics!

Cross-curricular learning with Roald Dahl

All these great lesson plans promote cross–curricular learning, with many subjects being included in one lesson. For example, you can teach up to three subjects in one lesson with James and the Giant Peach and across the James and the Giant Peach lesson ideas the subjects of English, geography, science, music and PSHE are covered.

It’s not just James and the Giant Peach which you can incorporate into your whole curriculum. Our Roald Dahl lesson plans also include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, George’s Marvellous Medicine and many more favourites.
