Primary Futures - The Wakefield experience

Steve Iredale NAHT Past President and NAHT Primary Futures Manager

When I first spoke to Wakefield school leaders at their annual conference in York in 2017 about Primary Futures and the many possibilities, little did I know what was about to be unleashed!

Primary Futures, developed in partnership by the NAHT and the Education and Employers charity, aims to:

■ Support the raising of standards of achievement for primary age children.

■ Broaden horizons and aspirations with regards to their own futures, enabling all children to achieve their full potential whilst working to break down social mobility barriers.

■ Helping children to see a clear link and purpose between their learning in primary school and their future, is at the heart of Primary Futures.

14 So how does it all work?

Schools and teachers sign up to join Primary Futures through our website https://primaryfutures.org/

They then have instant, free access to a growing number of volunteers in their locality via our state of the art database, who have registered to share their experiences and career journeys with children. It’s up to the individual or group of schools to plan events which work for them, with the support of the charity team in London or the local PF team. Identifying dates and times, event or activity focus and format, which year groups and how this fits into the curriculum, are some of the things schools consider. Schools then message potential volunteers via the website and wait for positive responses!
