We promote recycling of paper, cardboard and plastic and run a uniform shop to recycle second hand uniform. Our school organises three textile recycling collections a year – our last collection prevented the equivalent of 56.85 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere! Last year we promoted an eco–friendly ‘Christmas Wish Tree’. Children decorated a bauble for their class tree and we promoted this as an alternative to sending lots of separate cards, to help reduce the use of paper and save the environment. The initiative had great impact and the use of paper and card was reduced by 48%.

Our Eco Councillors were very keen to take part in ‘Switch Off Fortnight’ and monitored that children (and teachers!) switched off laptops and lights when not in use. We checked energy use before and after the project and worked out how much energy we had saved.

We promote ‘Active Travel’ fortnights and have seen the percentage of children walking to school increase by 20%. As well as helping children to be active and healthy, this initiative reduced congestion on our local roads and pollution in the environment.

Our Eco Council make sure our bird table is always well stocked and we take part in the RSPB Great British Bird Watch project and the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign.

As a result of our eco–work we are proud to share that we have achieved the highest national Eco–Schools Award of the ‘Green Flag’. We were proud to welcome the Mayor of Doncaster into school to help us celebrate and to raise the green flag on our flag pole. We have also achieved the Woodland Trust ‘Green Tree’ School Award at Gold Level and we are now aiming to develop new projects to achieve the Platinum Award.
